As the different types of sarees, the draping styles are also different in various regions and communities in India.

Popular ways of Draping a Saree

Once you take care of the basics, you should think about the sari draping style. A silk saree should be draped to make its elegance shine. Any wrinkle or untidy pleat will be taking away your saree’s charm. So ensure that your iron your sari well before you start to drape it. We have listed some of the popular ways of draping a sari that will make you stand out in a crowd.

Try Nivi style: It is a comfortable draping style and is perfect for the workplace. But you can also drape your sari in Nivi style for parties and different occasions where your heavy sarees will add a sophisticated appeal. If you are wearing a sari for the first time, then try this draping style as you will be able to manage your sari easily in this drape. You need to pleat your pallu well and then pin it on your left shoulder beautifully. The front drape of the sari that will go across your shoulder can be pleated in 5-6 inches to create a basic look or you can make smaller pleats of 3 inches and create a narrow look. To cover your body comfortably you can pleat it in 8-9 inches. If you drape your saree in Nivi style you will look dignified.

Select Nauvari style: Nauvari style is very common among Maharashtrian women. You can easily distinguish Nauvari saree draping style by its uncommon draping pattern. In this style, you need to wear the sari around your legs like a dhoti and the rest of the saree (upper part) should be draped like a typical sarees. If you are familiar with Lavani folk dancers, then you can picture out how a Nauvari draping style looks. Many women of Maharashtra are seen to carry this draping style during festive occasions and weddings. If you wish to move your legs easily and elegantly then you can drape your sari in this style.

Look graceful in Bengali style: A Bengali style is better known as Athpourey style is one of the most recognized sarees draping style. If you wish to wear your saree in a Bengali saree style, then remember that there will be no lower draped pleats and a box pleat will be there at the front of the sari. On both sides, the pallu of the sari will be coming from the back to the front. A Bengali woman can be seen to carry a bunch of keys that are attached to the pallu of the sari which is thrown over her right shoulder. A white and red bordered saree draped in Athpourey style is perfect for festive seasons.

Other than these three styles you can also try the Seedha pallu or Gujarati draping style that looks very like a lehenga choli. You can also try one of the toughest draping styles, Madisaru that is carried by married women and during various festivals in Tamil Nadu.

So now that you are aware of some of the popular sarees draping styles, you will need some practice and stylish effort to carry the perfect look in a sari.
